2018 Music & Mission Trip Plans

2018 tour 1

By Michael Diorio

Fifty-five members of our choir and choir family have been preparing for our 2018 Music and Mission Trip. In considering locations for choir tour destinations, we always look for something a little different, the path less traveled, as it were. Since we have England in our sites for 2020, we thought we could plan for something a bit more rare insomuch as culture, influence and opportunity are concerned.

2018 tour 2

Our destinations will include major cities in Croatia and Slovenia. The tour will conclude in Venice, where we will serve as the choir for Sunday morning mass at the Basilica of St Mark. As one can see, all of these countries are in close proximity to each other, and share the Adriatic coastline.

In addition to 5 concerts, we will also offer outreach through song and volunteer activity at various organizations and churches, and will engage in prepared service learning opportunities. We are excited to share with you our itinerary as we now know it to be.

Split and Trogir, Croatia June 28 – July 2
Our time is divided between Split and the village of Trogir, both located on the Dalmatian coast. The Palace of Roman Emperor Diocletian (entrance included) is remarkable, as it was the inspiration for the Neo-Classical Architecture movement of the 18th century. The entire village of Trogir is a UNESCO World Heritage site, in recognition of it remarkable collection of Greek, Roman and Venetian castles, palaces and towers. We present an evening concert with dinner following the performance. Sunday morning we have a service participation and concert at St. Domnius Cathedral, Split.

Zadar and Plitvice National Park July 2 - 3
Here we visit the “Zadar Sea Organ” a remarkable 230 foot long instrument that uses the tidal current and wind to make music. We continue on to Plitvice, checking into our hotel for one night.

2018 tour 3

Portoroz, Slovenia July 3 – 6
Tuesday morning we visit Plitvice National Park, another incredibly scenic locale in Croatia. We will have brought a sack lunch with us, and we have a picnic after our walk and hike through the walkways and paths around the lakes and gorges we then continue on to Portoroz. Wednesday we delve deeper into the modern problems of the former Yugoslavia – we meet with a Field Specialist of Land Mine Removal. Service Learning Project this afternoon. Thursday evening we have a Joint Concert with a local choir in the courtyard of a Benedictine convent in nearby Piran. After the performance we have a joint dinner in a specialty restaurant at the harbor.

2018 tour 4

VENICE, ITALY  July 6 – 9, 2018
We present a joint concert on Saturday evening, with dinner together after the performance. Sunday morning we have a service participation at San Marco Basilica. We depart in the early morning by private launch for Venice Airport, checking in for our return flight to Copenhagen, then Newark. where a coach will be waiting to return us to Bryn Mawr. As the itinerary develops, and as we confirm with the various charitable organizations with whom we are to partner overseas, we will keep the parish updated through our departure.

We would like to extend sincere appreciation to the Vestry and to this parish family for the great support of music at The Redeemer and, especially, for allowing us the opportunity to bring our gifts to others. It is a tremendous gift to be together in this way, a point of pride to share our parish with others, and to share in deeply meaningful experiences that make us stronger and more closely knit upon our return to The Redeemer. Thank you for all of your support!
